Weight Loss

Last reviewed 28 October 2026 · Editorial policy

Obesity is a long-term health condition linked to many other problems, including high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. In the US, 40.3% of adults had obesity between August 2021 and August 2023. About 9.4% had severe obesity.

Common options

  • Healthy eating and activity. Health care professionals usually start with changes to diet and physical activity. Check your BMI
  • Structured weight-loss programs. These often include counseling, an eating plan that fits your calorie needs, regular activity, and tracking your own progress.
  • Prescription medicines. These may be an option for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition. They work best alongside a lifestyle program.
  • Medicines that act like the hormone GLP-1. Some newer medicines mimic this gut hormone. Some people regain weight after they stop taking them. How GLP-1 weight-loss medications work
  • Weight-loss (bariatric) surgery. A doctor may suggest it if your BMI is 35 or higher.
  • Devices. These may be considered when other treatments haven't worked. Their long-term risks and benefits are not yet known.

When to see a doctor

  • Your BMI is 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a condition like high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
  • You want help setting a safe goal and time frame for losing weight.
  • You have tried lifestyle changes and they have not been enough.
