Menopause Symptoms

Last reviewed 28 October 2026 · Editorial policy

Menopause is when a woman's periods stop for good and pregnancy is no longer possible. It usually happens between ages 45 and 55, and the average age is 51. It is confirmed after 12 months without a period.

Common options

  • Lifestyle steps: dressing in layers, exercising, slow breathing, and limiting caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods.
  • Getting enough calcium and vitamin D to support your bones.
  • Menopausal hormone therapy. Weigh risks such as blood clots, stroke and breast cancer with your provider.
  • Non-hormonal prescription medicines for hot flashes, including certain antidepressants.
  • Water-based lubricants for vaginal dryness, and Kegel exercises for bladder control.
  • Healthy sleep habits for sleep problems.

When to see a doctor

  • You have spotting or bleeding between periods.
  • Any vaginal bleeding comes back after 12 or more months without a period, even a small amount.
  • Hot flashes, night sweats or mood changes are severe.
  • You are near age 65 and haven't had a bone density test.
