Fatty Liver Disease (MASLD)

Last reviewed 28 October 2026 · Editorial policy

MASLD, once called NAFLD, happens when too much fat builds up in the liver. It is not caused by heavy drinking. About 24% of US adults have it. A more serious form, called MASH, causes liver swelling and damage.

Common options

  • Losing weight slowly. Losing 3% to 5% of your body weight can reduce liver fat.
  • Losing 7% to 10% of your body weight may be needed to reduce liver swelling and scarring.
  • Eating healthy foods and watching portion sizes.
  • Staying physically active. This helps even without weight loss.
  • Vaccines your provider may recommend, such as for hepatitis A and B, flu and pneumococcal disease.
  • Treatment for complications if the disease leads to cirrhosis, or a liver transplant in some cases.

When to see a doctor

  • If you have type 2 diabetes or obesity. These raise your risk.
  • If blood tests show abnormal liver results.
  • Before taking supplements or herbal remedies. Some can damage the liver.
  • Before stopping any medicine. Only stop if your provider tells you to.

Research studies

Researchers are studying new treatments for fatty liver disease. A clinical study is one option you can discuss with your doctor.
